He was determined to ‘Get Moving Again’

When Edgal “Lee” Sheetz arrived at the Crichton Rehabilitation Center several months ago, he had one goal: to regain the independence he had before suffering two strokes.
The 81-year-old Friedens resident knew he’d have to work hard to achieve that goal.
Lee suffered his first stroke on June 30. After receiving initial treatment, he was transferred to Crichton for rehabilitation. But the next morning he suffered another stroke and was rushed to Conemaugh Memorial Hospital.
“When I arrived back at the Crichton Center, the nurses and techs were all so glad to see me,” Lee said. “They all gathered around and welcomed me back like I was coming home. It felt good. And I was determined to get moving again.”
The Crichton team quickly helped him to do just that.
Therapists worked with Lee on walking, hand exercises and mobility.
Although the staff encouraged him to do as much as possible for himself, “they didn’t baby Lee. They give some tough love when they have to,” said Connie Sheetz, his wife of 57 years.
Lee embraced the rehab work.
“I knew I had to apply myself,” he said. “I was determined and felt I was in the perfect place.”
His progress was dramatic, according to Connie. His therapist credits Lee’s attitude and work ethic. “He was an ideal patient. Very cooperative, motivated and patient,” said Occupational Therapist Brenda Punako. “He’s a very pleasant person, always willing to work.”
And his hard work paid off.
Lee needed considerable help walking when he first arrived at Crichton. By the time he went home – after about two weeks of rehabilitation – Lee was dressing himself, preparing food and moving around more independently. Today, he uses a walker or a cane, and sometimes walks without assistance.
Lee’s goal is to return to his favorite pastime – camping – as soon as possible.
“I just have to keep doing what they stressed at Crichton,” he said. “Those folks are deeply caring and understanding.
“My advice to other people going through what I did is to listen to everything your therapist says and get plenty of rest. That’s what the healing process is all about.”
