Lactation Services
Scientific evidence overwhelmingly indicates that breastfeeding is the optimal method of infant feeding and should be promoted and supported to endure the best health for women and their children. We, at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, strive to promote a philosophy of maternal-infant care which advocates breastfeeding and supports the normal physiologic function involved in this process. Our goal is to ensure that all families who choose to breastfeed their infants will have a successful and satisfying experience.
Exclusive breast milk feedings are recommended to provide optimal health benefits, especially for our preterm babies who face more challenges than full term infants. Here at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, we are now able to offer donor breast milk as an alternative to artificial formulas for our smallest and most vulnerable preterm babies, for our infants who are struggling with breastfeeding in the early days, and/or for our infants requiring supplementation until mom’s milk supply is established. Donor breast milk is regulated by The Human Milk Bank Association of North America and is rigorously tested to maintain the highest standard of safety.
We strive to support mothers throughout their breastfeeding journey, from the prenatal period through weaning. Conemaugh Health System’s Lactation team consists of Registered Nurse/International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants and Nurse Practitioner/International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants who are available to support and educate new mothers about breastfeeding their newborns. The lactation consultants will meet with moms after delivery to help them gain the knowledge and confidence they need to successfully meet their breastfeeding goals. We also offer Outpatient Lactation Services.
For breastfeeding concerns or to schedule an Outpatient Lactation visit, call the Lactation Services Department at 814.534.9757.
We proudly offer a prenatal breastfeeding class held the first Thursday of every month. Classes are held at Conemaugh East Hills Outpatient Center from 6 - 9 pm. Registration for the class is required. For more information or to register for the class, call 814.534.9009.
Formula Feeding
While we believe that breastfeeding is best for both mom and baby, we understand that some mothers are unable to or choose not to breastfeed. Formula is available for these mothers and information about formula preparation and formula feeding is provided as well.
