Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center Achieves 100th Robotic Bronchoscopy Milestone
June 24, 2025

Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center proudly announces the successful completion of its 100th robotic bronchoscopy using the Ion Endoluminal System, marking a significant milestone in the hospital’s commitment to advancing pulmonary care in the region. This achievement highlights Conemaugh Memorial’s leadership in offering cutting-edge, minimally invasive procedures for the early detection and diagnosis of lung conditions, including cancer.
Robotic bronchoscopy represents a breakthrough in diagnostic technology, allowing pulmonologists to navigate deep into the lungs with unprecedented precision. The Ion system features a thin, highly maneuverable catheter equipped with a camera and advanced shape-sensing technology, enabling physicians to reach small and hard-to-access nodules in the peripheral areas of the lungs. This results in earlier diagnosis, fewer complications, and quicker recovery times compared to traditional biopsy methods.
“Reaching our 100th robotic bronchoscopy is not only a technological milestone—it’s a reflection of our team’s unwavering dedication to bringing world-class care to our patients,” said Zulfiqar Ali, MD, Medical Director of Pulmonology at Conemaugh Memorial. “This advanced platform provides unmatched accuracy and consistency, allowing us to detect and diagnose lung diseases more effectively and begin treatment sooner.”
Since implementing the Ion system in late 2024, Conemaugh Memorial has experienced significant enhancements in diagnostic confidence and patient outcomes. The platform’s fiber-optic sensor tracks the catheter’s exact position hundreds of times per second, enabling physicians to safely steer through the complex bronchial pathways with optimal stability and visibility. The result: more precise biopsies and fewer follow-up procedures.
The 100th procedure marks a key milestone in Conemaugh Memorial’s mission to deliver advanced pulmonary care locally. With robotic bronchoscopy available close to home, patients in the Johnstown region have greater access to timely, accurate diagnoses without the need to travel to distant metropolitan centers.
“This milestone is just the beginning,” added Dr. Ali. “We are continuing to expand our program and remain focused on delivering advanced, patient-centered care to the communities we serve.”
Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center is proud to lead the region in robotic-assisted pulmonary procedures and remains committed to providing safe, innovative care for patients with complex lung conditions
