June 20, 2025
On May 20, 2025, surgeons at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center proudly completed the 100th Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) procedure, marking yet another significant achievement in the hospital’s commitment to advancing cardiovascular care.
VTE is a blood clot that forms in the veins of the body that poses a serious risk to one’s health. There are two main types of VTE that providers treat at Conemaugh Memorial: Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE). DVTs, performed by both the vascular team and the interventional radiology team, are blood clots that form within deep veins, usually in the legs. PEs, also performed by both the vascular team and the interventional radiology team, are blood clots that form in other parts of the body and eventually travel to the lungs making it difficult for patients to breathe, cause chest pain, or even be life-threatening.
"Reaching this milestone reflects our team’s exceptional dedication to patient care and the continuous pursuit of medical excellence," said John Gray, MD, Medical Director of Vascular Surgery. "Our team's expertise and the integration of cutting-edge technology have been pivotal in achieving optimal outcomes for our patients."
VTE affects approximately 900,000 Americans each year. Prompt, targeted treatment like that offered at Conemaugh can significantly reduce long-term complications such as post-thrombotic syndrome and chronic venous insufficiency. The completion of the 100th procedure reflects not only clinical excellence, but also a patient-first approach that emphasizes safety, innovation, and recovery.
Conemaugh Memorial has achieved exceptional milestones in cardiovascular care including the completion is its 300th WATCHMAN procedure this past March, completing its 500th Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) in October of 2024, and becoming the first hospital in the state of Pennsylvania to utilize revolutionary technology to treat clots in an upper extremity.
Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center's commitment to excellence is further evidenced by its recent recognitions, including the 2024 Excellence in Patient Safety Award from the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania. Conemaugh continues to invest in state-of-the-art facilities and technologies to enhance patient care and safety throughout the health system.
