Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center Reaches Milestone with 200th Venous Thromboembolism Procedure

Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center has reached a significant milestone in advanced vascular care, recently performing its 200th venous thromboembolism (VTE) procedure. The achievement reflects the continued growth of Conemaugh’s vascular and cardiovascular programs and its commitment to providing patients throughout the region with access to advanced, minimally invasive treatment close to home.

VTE is a serious medical condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein and can become life-threatening if not promptly diagnosed and treated. The two most common forms are deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). DVT occurs when a clot develops in a deep vein, most often in the leg, while a PE occurs when a clot travels to the lungs, potentially causing shortness of breath, chest pain and other serious complications.

At Conemaugh Memorial, patients with VTE benefit from the expertise of vascular surgery and interventional radiology teams, who use advanced, minimally invasive techniques to remove or treat blood clots and restore blood flow.

VTE affects an estimated 900,000 Americans each year. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are critical to reducing the risk of serious complications, including recurrent blood clots, post-thrombotic syndrome and chronic venous insufficiency.

The 200th VTE procedure adds to a series of milestones demonstrating Conemaugh Memorial’s expanding capabilities in cardiovascular and vascular care. The hospital has also reached significant milestones in its WATCHMAN and transcatheter aortic valve

replacement (TAVR) programs, providing patients with access to advanced, minimally invasive treatments for complex cardiovascular conditions. Conemaugh Memorial was also the first hospital in Pennsylvania to utilize groundbreaking technology to treat blood clots in an upper extremity, further expanding treatment options available to patients throughout the region.
