Brain Injury
Traumatic Brain Injury Program
Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center is home to a specialized brain program that offers skull base surgery for injuries that occur between the craniovertebral junction and the craniofacial region. If surgery is required, it is performed by a team of board certified brain injury specialists in a surgical suite equipped to handle complex brain injuries.
Using brain navigation imaging technology, surgeons can pinpoint the injury and its relationship to vascular structures or veins. This allows surgeons to keep vascular structures intact during surgery, significantly reducing complications and speeding the recovery process. It also enables the surgical team to get to deep-seated, hard-to-reach problem areas with minimal disruption to the brain. As a result, conditions that can be difficult to treat or may be considered inoperable can be treated with greater precision and safety.
To reduce secondary injury to the brain, Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center’s neuroscience and trauma teams utilize protocols that increase oxygen to the brain. These protocols begin immediately in the Department of Emergency Medicine, continue through diagnostic testing, and are in place during surgery.
Under the guidance and direction of Conemaugh Health System physicians, patients receive specialized post-operative care until discharged.

Brain Injury Support Group
This group is open to any individual affected by a brain injury or stroke. An open forum includes informal discussions, sharing of personal stories, and guest speakers. Stroke is an acquired brain injury and is the leading cause of disability in the United States. Although many functional abilities may be restored after a stroke, recovery is an ongoing process. This group provides education and information for stroke survivors and caregivers, enabling them to maintain a positive attitude.
