Neuropsychology focuses on brain functioning and the relationship between the brain and behavior. Brain function is evaluated through objective testing of memory and thinking skills such as memory, thinking, motor, and sensory abilities through a series of brief tests.

A neuropsychological exam is performed to clarify diagnosis and to provide necessary treatment recommendations. Results can identify patterns of disability that may require further medical management, or can be used to monitor progress after a brain injury or other neurological disorder.

Benefits of Neuropsychology

Patients who may benefit from a neuropsychological evaluation include, but are not limited to:

  • Brain injury patients with possible effects of concussion
  • Stroke patients
  • Neuropsychiatric disorder patients
  • Seizure disorder patients
  • Individuals suffering the effects of toxic chemicals or chronic substance abuse
  • Patients in whom dementia may be present

A neuropsychological evaluation can be particularly helpful in:

  • Determining or clarifying a diagnosis
  • Monitoring a patient's progress after a brain injury or another type of neurological disorder
  • Determining recommendations for follow-up diagnostic assessment, necessary treatment, or rehabilitation

The evaluation is a non-invasive procedure. There is no pain and no needles. The evaluation typically takes several hours to complete and is tailored to each individual. Sometimes due to the length of the evaluation, it may be scheduled in a series of appointments. Most evaluation tasks are done while the patient sits at a table.
