December 28, 2018

Jennifer Silvis, DO, general surgery resident physician at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, has been named one of three nationally recognized resident physician surgeons as the recipient of the EAST/John M. Templeton, Jr., MD Military Call to Service Scholarship. The scholarship is open to active and reserve service members across the United States.

The John M. Templeton, Jr., MD Military Call to Service scholarship was established in the honor of John M. Templeton, a Naval physician. Each year, candidates apply to the scholarship from across the country. Only three applicants, one from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, are selected as the prestigious scholarship awardees. Dr. Silvis’ selection reflects her commendable military merit and her dedicated service to the people of her local community, country, and planet.

“The Eastern Association for the Surgery on Trauma (EAST) Annual Scientific Assembly happens once a year and is the largest trauma surgery conference in America,” said Dr. Silvis. She was selected as the United States Air Force recipient of the scholarship, which will be presented in January of 2019. “I am honored to have been selected as a member of the Air Force.” Dr. Silvis will attend the 32nd EAST Annual Scientific Assembly in Austin, Texas being held January 15-19, 2019.

Dr. Silvis has honorably served in the Air Force since 2003. As a medic in the Air Force, Dr. Silvis served combat tours of duty to Afghanistan and Iraq. She continues to have a distinguished career as a flight surgeon for the 171st Air refueling Wing in Pittsburgh. Dr. Silvis plans on continuing her “call to service” for the foreseeable future.

Dr. Silvis is a graduate of Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and is a doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO). Her specialty is General Surgery. She is currently completing her residency at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown.
