Conemaugh Physician Group – Surgery welcomes the return of former resident Lusine Mesropyan, DO, MA to its practice. Dr. Mesropyan specializes in hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery, adding a new specialty to Conemaugh Health System.
“We are thrilled to have Dr. Mesropyan join our team,” says Dr. Susan Williams, Chief Medical Officer, Conemaugh Health System. “Her expertise will allow us to provide care to our population of patients diagnosed with cancer of the liver, pancreas, and biliary tract including gallbladder and bile ducts.”
“I have had exceptional mentors during my training who have instilled in me a great appreciation for this specific discipline," says Dr. Mesropyan. A significant portion of the field focuses on the management of oncological diseases which require lifelong management. "I greatly value strong and long-term doctor-patient relationships and being available to my patients as they battle these life-altering illnesses," Dr. Mesropyan explains.
“Most of the patients in Johnstown with diseases of the hepato-pancreatico-biliary system are currently referred out of town to other medical facilities,” says Dr. Mesropyan. Offering care close to home is important for successful outcomes, she explains. “It is important to be comfortable in the area where one is receiving treatment. If the care services are closer to home, closer to the patient’s family, friends, and daily activities, it helps with both recovery and ease of access when emergencies arise. Patients benefit from having their support network and medical care in one area, giving them more independence and permitting them to take better control of their disease process."
Dr. Mesropyan earned her medical degree from Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine in California and pursued research at the University of Southern California Research Center for Liver Diseases. She completed an internship at St. Barnabas Hospital in New York, followed by a General Surgery residency at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. She returns to Conemaugh after completing a Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery fellowship at Florida Hospital in Orlando, which treats more newly diagnosed cancer patients than any health care system in the southeastern United States. While there, she was recognized by the dean of the medical school for the education she provided to the medical students under her charge.
"I had a great education as a resident at Conemaugh," she says. "I am excited to bring back with me from Florida the experience treating complex diseases of the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and biliary tract."
Dr. Mesropyan is board-certified surgeon who is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, and International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.
