Conemaugh Physician Group Welcomes Adolescent Psychiatrist

May 29, 2019

Conemaugh Health System welcomes Dr.  Madhavi Kandel board certified psychiatrist specializing in child / adolescent and adult patients.

Dr. Kandel is a graduate of Nepal Medical College, Kathmandu University, Nepal with academic distinctions in physiology. She completed an internship and residency in psychiatry and neurobehavioral sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University in Virginia. She completed her training with a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship and held the position of chief resident at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia.

At Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Dr. Kandel will treat both inpatients and outpatients, four years of age and older for a range of mental health conditions. She has special interests for patients with autism, anxiety, depression, hyperactivity, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other mental health concerns

“I’ve always been intrigued by biological and neurological basis of behavior,” said Dr. Kandel. “Some children get mislabeled as ‘bad kids’, when they actually have an undiagnosed mental health issue. By identifying and treating these issues early in life, through medication therapy and behavioral modification, we can help patients improve and effectively improve their mental health.”

Dr. Kandel is a member of Nepal Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, and Lions Club International. She was involved with teaching medical and physician assistant students.

Dr. Kandel’s husband is a family practice resident at Conemaugh Memorial. They are proud parents of a son and daughter.  She enjoys spending time with her husband and children, hiking, and listening to music.
