Conemaugh Nason Medical Center Recognized for Higher Quality in Maternity Care

January 25, 2018

Conemaugh Nason Medical Center has been recognized as a Blue Distinction Center®+ for Maternity Care, designated as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated health care facilities that demonstrate expertise in delivering improved safety and health outcomes for patients.  The Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care program evaluates hospitals on quality measures for vaginal and cesarean delivery, including cost efficiency.

Childbirth is the most common cause of hospitalization with nearly four million babies born each year in the United States. According to the National Centers for Health Statistics and the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ), cesarean section is the most common operating room procedure. The Conemaugh Nason Special Delivery Unit prides itself by providing no elective inductions or deliveries prior to 39 weeks gestation unless medically necessary and our cesarean section average rate is well below the national average.

“We are proud of the exceptional care we provide for mothers and their newborns,” says Michelle Buttry, Chief Nursing Officer, Conemaugh Nason Medical Center. “Our team works diligently to meet patient needs while maintaining high levels of patient safety for mom and baby.  Our patients benefit from the personalized touch of our professional nurse midwives.  Enhanced patient education regarding the importance of full-term births, close monitoring and caring compassionate communication are the key to a healthy baby.  This is the essence of what we provide to our patients.”
