Conemaugh Miners Medical Center Designated as a Black Lung Screening Site

January 2, 2018

Conemaugh Miners Medical Center is now an official Black Lung Screening site following confirmation from the Department of Labor.

As a screening site, Conemaugh Miners Medical Center will offer the federal Black Lung screening to present and former coal workers, who were disabled from pneumoconiosis (black lung disease) as a result of their employment in the coal mining industry.

“The screening process involves an occupational history, chest x-ray, lung function tests, and blood tests to determine if the disease is present and its severity,” says Debbie Spells-Wilson, RN, MSN, Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Conemaugh Miners Medical Center. “We look forward to providing this important service to our communities and surrounding states.”

The Black Lung Benefits Acts provides eligible coal workers medical coverage for treatment of lung disease related to the diagnosis of pneumoconiosis. A referral list is created by the Department of Labor of eligible referral resources throughout the nation, which can provide screening services. This list is provided to the coal workers and their families as a reference to help them choose where they would like to go for the screening process. To obtain authorization, workers should contact their local Department of Labor office. The Johnstown office number is 814-619-7777 or 1-800-347-3754.

Once the coal worker has selected Conemaugh Miners Medical Center to perform their evaluation, they will be contacted to schedule an exam. The Black Lung Program at Miners will be headed by Dr. Robert Pickerill, Pulmonologist, and Steve Kutchman, Manager of Respiratory Services.
