Conemaugh Hospitals Earn "A" for Patient Safety in Fall 2018 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Guide

November 8, 2018

Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center has earned its third consecutive ‘A’ rating for its efforts in protecting patients from harm and meeting the highest safety standards in the United States. Conemaugh Nason Medical Center has earned this designation for the first time. The recognition is from The Leapfrog Group, a Washington D.C. based organization aiming to improve health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. Conemaugh Memorial also earned an ‘A’ for Fall 2017 and Spring 2018.

The Safety Grade assigns an A, B, C, D, or F grade to hospitals across the country based on performance in preventing medical errors, infections, and other harms among patients in their care. In the Fall 2018 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, only 855 hospitals in the United States received an ‘A’ grade, including Conemaugh Memorial and Conemaugh Nason.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for our team,” says William Caldwell, Market President of Conemaugh Health System. “Patient safety is our top priority. Earning this national recognition, especially during three consecutive evaluation periods for Conemaugh Memorial, confirms that we are focused on effectively providing care to our patients in a safe environment and utilize proper protocols.”

“Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Grades recognize hospitals like Conemaugh Memorial and Conemaugh Nason that focus on advancing patient safety. This ranking provides an important resource for patients, and a benchmark for hospitals, to determine how care at one hospital compares to others in a region,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Hospitals that earn an A Hospital Safety Grade deserve to be recognized for their efforts in preventing medical harm and errors.”

Developed under the guidance of an Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to approximately 2,600 United States hospitals twice per year. It is peer reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public.
