Conemaugh Health System announced today that veteran healthcare leader William E. (Bill) Caldwell, FACHE has been named chief executive officer (CEO) of Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center and Market President of Conemaugh Health System. Caldwell replaces Steve Tucker, who is retiring in the fall after nearly 33 years of service at the Johnstown-based health system.
"We are delighted to welcome Bill to Conemaugh," said Victor Giovanetti, FACHE, LifePoint Health Eastern Group President. "Bill is an experienced healthcare executive known for his passion for quality care, strong operational skills, and unwavering commitment to employees, physicians and patients. We look forward to working with him and Steve over the next several weeks as he transitions into his new role and begins an exciting journey to find additional ways Conemaugh can improve the health and wellbeing of this region."
Caldwell joins Conemaugh from Wilson Medical Center, a Duke LifePoint Healthcare facility located in Wilson, North Carolina, where he has served as CEO since 2014. During his tenure at Wilson, Caldwell led many initiatives aimed at improving patient care outcomes, and he recently embarked on a facility master plan project to modernize Wilson's infrastructure.
Before Wilson, Caldwell served as Chief Operating Officer of LewisGale Medical Center, a 506-bed tertiary hospital and regional referral center in Salem, Virginia. Prior to his role as COO, he was Vice President for Physician Practice Management for LewisGale, overseeing the operations of more than 130 providers in 24 practice locations. He previously served as CEO for Retreat Hospital in Richmond and held various executive positions at Henrico Doctors' Hospital and Retreat Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, as well as John Randolph Medical Center in Hopewell, Virginia.
"We are pleased that a noted leader from within the Duke LifePoint family will be taking the helm from Steve," said Conemaugh Board Chair, Patricia Serotkin, D.Ed. "In addition to his great track record of improving quality care and patient, employee and physician satisfaction, Bill is known for his commitment to community. We hope Conemaugh's communities join our board and team in welcoming him and his wife Lori to our area."
Caldwell holds a master of health administration degree from The Ohio State University in Columbus and a bachelor of business administration from the University of Notre Dame. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Bill serves on numerous local boards including the United Way of Wilson County and The Wilson Chamber of Commerce.
"I am excited to join the team at Conemaugh Health," said Caldwell. "I have been so impressed by what I have learned so far about the system, its work, accomplishments and regional impact so far. I look forward to meeting everyone and collaborating with employees, physicians, volunteers, and communities to continue strengthening the system, growing our services, and expanding how we are advancing healthcare delivery across the region."
