Dr. Vena, a native of Cambria County, grew up in a farming community in Munster. He graduated from Bishop Carroll High School in 1982. He earned an undergraduate degree in Pre-medicine with honors and an MS degree in Physiology with honors from Penn State University in 1986 and 1989. While a member of the University Scholors Program at Penn State, he found time to become a national champion in motorcycle hill climbing in 1983.
Dr. Vena earned his MD degree from the world-renowned University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1983. He then completed his general surgical internship and orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY, one of the leading orthopedic surgery programs in the country.
Dr. Vena returned to area in 1998 to join Western Pennsylvania Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.
In his spare time Dr. Vena enjoys farming, hunting, and outdoor conservation activities. His wife, Dr. Johanna Vena, is a veterinarian and the owner and operator of Cambria Veterinary Care in historic Cambria City in Johnstown. They have three children together and are actively involved and committed to the community and church.
Dr. Vena has been subspecialty certified in Sports Medicine and is skilled in the most advanced arthroscopic techniques. He was the first surgeon in this area to do all arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs and the specialized reverse total shoulder replacement.
He is up to date on the latest advancements in joint replacement including total hips through any approach, including anterior and superior with and without specialized beds.
