The Office of Graduate Medical Education and the Clinical Research Department of Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center will host the 2014 Research Symposium on Wednesday, April 23, 2013, at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, Learning Living Center.

Opening remarks will begin at 4 pm followed by presentations of research and judging at 4:15 pm. A reception and poster display will be held at 6:15 pm. Dinner and announcements of award winners at 6:45 pm.

Clinical research integrates various missions of the Conemaugh Health System including education, research and patient care. The Research Program within CHS is dedicated to supporting the research efforts of the medical staff, residents and students while ensuring compliance with all applicable ethical, legal and regulatory standards. The availability of sophisticated centralized resources offers Conemaugh investigators an exceptional research advantage. Through this structure and the mentorship of teaching faculty, research is an important component of resident education and life long learning. We are proud to be part of this organization-wide movement to promote research and evidence-based practice as well as the scholarship of our residents and faculty.

The guest speaker for the evening, Edward Eugene Cornwell, III, MD, Professor and Chairman, Department of Surgery at Howard University Hospital, will present “Outcomes Research and Its Impact on Trauma Care: Who, Why, When?”

Dr. Cornwell’s career interest is in the prevention, treatment, and outcome disparities of traumatic injuries, and their critical care sequelae. He has risen through the academic ranks through teaching and clinical appointments at Howard University (1989-1993), the University of Southern California (1993-1997), and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (1998 to 2008). He has authored or co-authored over 240 articles and chapters and has given over 330 invited presentations in the field.
