The Conemaugh Health Foundation will host The Art of Healing Exhibition: Reflections 2014 at the Johnstown gallery of the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art (located at the Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown). Opening exhibit and reception will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2014 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
This is the 5th annual exhibit for the Arts for Healing Program. Each piece of artwork was created by members of the Arts for Healing program at Conemaugh East Hills. The program helps improve the quality of life for patients with chronic pain, such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke. Through artistic expression, these conditions may be reduced, resulting in decreased pain, anxiety, and depression.
The most recent program participants worked with local artist Kathy Reed. Kathy introduced the group to Polish papercutting, a Folk Art tradition known as Wycinanki. Wycinanki focuses on bright and decorative geometrical features, repitition, and symmetry. Artists-in-Residence help patients focus away from pain, redirect frustration, communicate complex feelings, relax and enhance the quality of life. As one participant describes, “This was fascinating and inspiring and has proven to be an excellent outlet for everyone who experiences pain or discomfort. At Arts for Healing I put my troubles behind me and let myself be absorbed into the art.”
The event is free and open to the public. The exhibit is on display starting Friday March 21, 2014 through June 6, 2014. The event was funded in part by a Project Stream Grant from the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts and the Pennsylvania Rural Arts Alliance.
