The Medical Skills Learning Center (MSLC) at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center has earned reaccreditation as a Comprehensive-Accredited Education Institute (AEI) by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The AEI accreditation program is a voluntary peer-review process. Institutions that successfully complete the process are accredited for a period of three years. Conemaugh's MSLC is one of only 68 accredited simulation labs in the world.

"We are extremely excited to receive this reaccreditation," says Dr. Justin Boccardo, Conemaugh Physician Group - Vascular Surgery, Surgical Residency Faculty and MSLC Surgical Director. "Simulation is proven to be useful in medical education as residents utilize critical thinking and decision making skills in a safe environment."

An ACS-AEI addresses the educational needs of a broad spectrum of learners and advances the science of simulation-based education. The overall goals of the ACS-AEI program are to enhance patient safety, support maintenance of certification requirements, address competencies that all surgeons and surgical residents need to achieve and demonstrate, and enhance access to contemporary surgical education. Learners are given the opportunity to learn and practice new skills while receiving immediate feedback without compromising patient safety or comfort.

Conemaugh's MSLC is home to a variety of patient simulators including adult, child, infant and mother-child birthing simulator. Controlled by a member of the MSLC staff, the simulators talk, cry, bleed, sweat, adjust to change in position and interventions, replicate vital sign changes and provide real-life medical scenarios for users, including reproducing rare and complicated conditions.
