The School of Histology at Memorial Medical Center is an accredited one-year program designed to educate and train histology technicians. These medical professionals work in the laboratory, and examine and prepare tissue samples removed from surgeries or autopsies. They work in several settings, including hospital and research laboratories, veterinary medical laboratories, or medical examiner/coroner offices.
Students are required to complete 1,220 hours of combined classroom and clinical education. Upon completion of the program, they are eligible to take the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) registry exam. Graduates can also receive additional training to learn how to perform autopsies.
Memorial is one of the largest hospitals between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg. It is a teaching hospital with a designated trauma center, a long-standing open-heart program, and a wide range of medical and surgical services. As a result, histology students receive exceptional training and are well-prepared for careers in the field. In fact, in recent years, every graduate received a job offer. The School of Histology is the only one in Pennsylvania with National Association of Clinical Laboratories accreditation.
