Conemaugh Health System (CHS) has been featured as a “Partner Success Story” through the Emergency Care Research Institute (ECRI), an independent, nonprofit organization that researches the optimal approaches to improving the safety, cost-effectiveness, and quality of patient care. CHS attained ECRI’s services in order to practice a more strategic supply chain process to benchmark prices and make purchasing decisions based on research and clinical evidence, not hype.

After integrating the assessment tools and advisory services, the organization saw immediate results. In five years, and with the active involvement of over 20 physicians, CHS has sustained a $21.6 million reduction in annual expenses, including a 25% decrease in supply costs for cardiac procedures alone. “’Have you checked the ECRI?’ has become part of our vernacular at Conemaugh,” says Stephen Tambolas, Vice President of Supply Chain and Facilities. “No medical supplies or equipment come into this organization without first comparing them with the ECRI Institute price benchmarks.”
