In honor of World Breastfeeding Week 2009 (August 1-7), sponsored by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), the local Laurel Highlands Breastfeeding Coalition will hold a Baby Stroller Decorating Contest Tuesday, August 4, 5 p.m., in the Johnstown Galleria, Lower Level (near Auntie Anne’s Pretzels). Mothers are encouraged to help raise awareness as to the importance of breastfeeding by participating in this fun event. A gift certificate will be presented to the winner, while a prize will be given to each participant.
The theme of this year’s World Breastfeeding Week is Breastfeeding: A Vital Emergency Response. Are you Ready? WABA’s goal is to raise awareness about the role that breastfeeding plays in emergencies. According to WABA, during an emergency, child mortality can increase two to 70 times above average due to emergency related conditions such as respiratory illness and malnutrition. Therefore, mothers need support in order to continue or reestablish breastfeeding efforts.
The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) is a global network of individuals and organizations concerned with the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding worldwide. To learn more about the week-long celebration, visit their website at http://worldbreastfeedingweek.org.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, “both babies and mothers benefit from breastfeeding. Breast milk is easy to digest and contains antibodies that can protect infants from bacterial and viral infections. Research indicates that women who breastfeed may have lower rates of certain breast and ovarian cancers.” (http://www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding/)
