April 22 through April 27 is Laboratory Professionals Week – and Conemaugh Health System is celebrating the vital role of these professionals in the diagnosis and prevention of disease.

“Clinical laboratory professionals are essential members of Conemaugh’s health care team,” says Anthony Campagna, Executive Director of Diagnostic and Outpatient Services, Conemaugh Health System. “Our quality medical care depends on all our many laboratory technologists, technicians and support staff performing at a high level.”

More than 2.6 million laboratory tests were performed at Conemaugh Health System in 2012, providing important information to help provide a complete picture of a patient’s health status. Using state of the art biomedical equipment and performing complicated analysis, laboratory clinicians can detect the presence of cancer, identify various infections caused by bacteria and viruses in addition to measuring analytes such as glucose, cholesterol, Vitamin D and drug levels.

All three Conemaugh labs are accredited by Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) through the Pennsylvania Department of Health and voluntarily participate in accreditation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center is also accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and the Joint Commission.

Nearly 200 employees work in various laboratory related positions at Conemaugh Memorial, Miners and Meyersdale Medical Centers including pathology, phlebotomy, histology, cytology, chemistry, hematology, flow cytometry, blood bank, microbiology and immunology. Support services of laboratory information systems, results reporting, courier and mailroom also play a vital role supporting the department of Laboratory Medicine.

Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center has been actively training new Clinical Laboratory Scientists (Medical Technologists) since the 1950s through its Medical Technology Program. Additionally, the School of Histotechnology recently became affiliated with Penn Highlands Community College as an associate degree program.
