Brain Awareness Week is March 11 – 17 and Conemaugh Health System is making a strong effort to educate the community about brain health.
For the fifth year, Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center will sponsor a public Brain Awareness Health Fair in accordance with the international event hosted by the Dana Foundation, a private philanthropic organization supporting brain research through grants, publications and educational programs. Conemaugh joins more than 750 events taking place in 49 countries and 36 US states. The fair will be held Tuesday, March 12 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Conemaugh Memorial main campus Atrium. Vendors, interactive displays and brain health information will be available.
A public educational event, Concussions …What is the Big Deal?, will be held the same day at 6:30 p.m. at the Richland Performing Arts Center at Richland High School. Dr. Robert Sawicki, Conemaugh Memorial Neuropsychology, and Dr. William DeMayo, Medical Director of the Conemaugh Concussion Clinic, will discuss concussion warning signs, testing, reducing likelihood of a concussion and recovery. This informative workshop is for parents, students, coaches, trainers and all who are interested in preventing and managing concussions.
Drs. Sawicki and DeMayo will be joined by Mark R. Lovell, Ph.D FACPN, D.Sci (Hon). Dr. Lovell is internationally recognized as a concussion expert for his development of innovative neurocognitive testing programs and ground breaking research. He is the chairman and chief executive officer of ImPACT Applications. ImPACT is a widely used computerized concussion evaluation tool and is the first league-wide neuropsychological testing program utilized by the National Football League (NFL) and the National Hockey League (NHL). Conemaugh serves as a Credentialed ImPACT Consultant program.
