Dr. Aurelio Rodriguez is a familiar face to some because of his three appearances on the TLC Network’s “Trauma: Life in the ER.” At Conemaugh Memorial, Dr. Rodriquez is a familiar face because he helped train two of his fellow trauma surgeons.
Dr. Rodriquez helped train Dr. S. Lee Miller, Conemaugh Physician Group, General, Critical Care and Trauma surgeon during his fellowship training at University of Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore. Dr. Russell Dumire, Conemaugh Physician Group, General, Critical Care, Endocrine and Trauma surgeon also trained with Dr. Rodriguez during a residency rotation at the same location.
“It is exciting to have a talented physician and mentor like Dr. Rodriguez join us here at the Conemaugh Health System,” says Dr. Miller. “We look forward to the expertise that he provides to our residents and staff and the exceptional care and skills he is known for in treating trauma patients.”
A native of Peru, Dr. Rodriguez came to the United States as a naval physician after completing his medical education at the Faculty of Sciences, San Marcos University in Lima, Peru. He then completed residency training at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and the University of Michigan, School of Medicine in Pontiac, Michigan. He completed a Fellowship in Trauma and Critical Care at the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems in Baltimore, Maryland and also a cardiothoracic residency at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
Dr. Rodriguez’s decision to become a trauma surgeon was the result of a tragic accident which took the life of his sister many years ago. “I wanted to be able to help people like my sister,” says Dr. Rodriguez. “In trauma care we have that opportunity every day to save lives and impact families.” He has a passion for teaching and for working closely with pre-hospital providers. He looks forward to both through his new position at Conemaugh Memorial.
Dr. Rodriguez’s lengthy resume includes numerous academic honors including “Teacher of the Year” awards from University of Maryland Shock Trauma, East Carolina University Emergency Medicine, George Washington University Emergency Medicine and Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He comes to Johnstown most recently from Sinai Hospital in Baltimore where he served as Associate Director of the Division of Trauma Surgery prior to that he worked at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh where he served as Director Emeritus of the Shock Trauma Center and as a professor of surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine.
Dr. Rodriguez is a founding member of the American Trauma Society and the Pan-American Trauma Society. He serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Trauma: Injury, Infection and Critical Care, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Interamerican College of Physicians and Surgeons, the American College of Emergency Medicine and the International College of Surgeons.
