Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center’s Level One Regional Resource Trauma Center has received a full three-year accreditation from the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation with no recommended opportunities for improvement.
“This is the second time in our twenty-five year history that NO opportunities for improvement were identified,” says Dr. Russell Dumire, Medical Director of Trauma Services and of the General Surgery residency at Conemaugh Memorial. “The surveyors were extremely complimentary and indicated that we have an exceptional program.”
The Regional Resource Trauma Center, based at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, is one of just eleven Level I trauma centers in Pennsylvania – and the only one between Pittsburgh and Hershey.
To earn the rigorous Level I certification, a trauma center must:
- Prove 24-hour staff readiness
- Participate in research programs to make sure that the latest treatment and care methods are provided
- Provide ongoing educational opportunities for every member of the trauma team
- Support a Surgical Residency program, another way in which team members stay current with the latest treatment methods
- Treat more than 750 trauma patients a year
To make sure staff is fully prepared; nearly every health care professional at Conemaugh Memorial receives ongoing training in trauma care. This includes x-ray technicians, laboratory specialists, surgical technicians – anyone who may need to respond to and participate in trauma care at a moment’s notice.
“We are extremely proud of our trauma program,” says Steve Tucker, President of Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. “This accreditation could not have been possible without the dedication and hard work from all those involved in trauma care throughout the organization from pre-hospital personnel through rehabilitation. Our physicians and staff are exceptional and all should be very proud of this accomplishment.”
