CT scans require a physician’s order and, except in emergencies, are scheduled procedures. If you are having a contrast injection, you should not have anything to eat or drink for a few hours before your scan. Most CT scans of the abdomen and pelvis require that patients drink an oral contrast agent at least 4 hours before the scan or the night before their test. This helps radiologists identify the digestive system and detect any abnormalities. If you are 50 years or older, have high blood pressure, renal disease, heart disease or are taking chemotherapy, a GFR blood test will also be required before your CT scan. Please be sure to check with your physician if you have questions or would like to verify anything about the procedure. Please be sure to bring your physician’s order to your appointment.
