The Family Medical Center is conveniently located on the MMC campus and serves as the nucleus of MMC's Family Medicine Residency Program. First-, second- and third-year residents are scheduled in the Model Office one, three and four half-days per week, respectively.
We take a psychosocial approach to instruction, teaching residents how to strengthen their assessment skills and offering them outlets to address the stresses associated with their profession. In addition to traditional medical management, our biopsychological approach to patient care introduces residents to the benefits of complementary therapies. The most common procedures performed in the Family Medical Center include:
• minor skin surgery and suturing
• endometrial biopsy
• colposcopy
• punch biopsy
• cryotherapy
• pap smears
• gynecological exams
• EKGs
• splinting
• anoscopy
• tympanometry
• audiometry
• spirometry
The physicians and staff of FMC have recently begun using new secure electronic health records (EHRs). This allows for efficient documentation of patient information in an organized and readily accessible way. Necessary information can be securely shared with colleagues quickly and confidentially, ensuring that patients receive the level of care they need and deserve.
The advent of EHRs and other tools to make medicine more efficient underscores the need for residents to fully understand the basic tenets of business operations. With that in mind, we introduce residents to practice management issues. This includes seminars by professionals in the areas of medicine, law, business and risk management. A two-month office management rotation in the second year enhances the curriculum.
