What to Expect During Your Appointment

Home > Services > Women's Health > What to Expect During Your Appointment

Please arrive promptly for your appointment.

When you arrive, please sign in and a nurse will help you to register.

A nurse will escort you to a changing area where you will be provided a comfortable gown and a locker to store your belongings during your exam.

If an exam room is available, you will be taken directly back to the exam room. If a room is not immediately available, you will be escorted to a second waiting area specifically for women waiting for a mammogram. Male family members may not sit with you in this second waiting area to ensure the comfort of all our female patients.

A mammography technician will escort you to an exam room where she will walk you through the mammogram.

The exam itself takes only a few minutes.

The equipment automatically selects appropriate filter combinations based on breast density and thickness. Optimal compression technology provides warm and smooth feeling during the exam. The compression paddle stops automatically at the point of optimal compression.

After the exam, you will be escorted back to the second waiting area to await your results.

A radiologist will review the results immediately to determine if additional testing is needed. 5 to 15% of screening mammograms require additional testing such as an additional mammogram, ultrasound or breast biopsy. If you require additional testing, every effort will be made to schedule them as quickly as possible to ease your mind.

Results of mammograms will be shared with your family physician and a letter will be sent to your home.
