Residents, medical students, nursing and allied health students, and other health care professionals gain experience and strengthen their skills by practicing a variety of procedures and techniques. An intensive two-week “boot camp” introduces many students to surgical basics, including instrument identification, suturing and wound closure and an introduction to sterile technique. Through interactive Human Patient Simulators, other simulation tools and cadavers, students learn to master a range of procedures:
- Femoral and CVS access
- Airway management
- Infant and adult tracheotomies
- Intubation
- Spinal anesthesia injections
- Suturing and wound closure
|
- Laparoscopic procedures
- Chest tube insertion
- Patient assessments
- Code team training
- Patient, family and staff communication

Cadavers are used to help students learn how to independently perform more complex procedures, such as inguinal hernia repair, gastrectomy and anatomic exposures for trauma.
