Dr. William Carney serves as Interim Chief Medical Officer of the Conemaugh Health System. In this role, Dr. Carney is responsible for oversight of medical staff activities at all CHS entities including the Conemaugh Physician Group (CPG), management of Graduate Medical Education including seven programs/80 residents, quality and risk management, physician education and development, physician recruitment and retention, and continued maturation of service line operations.

In 2010, Dr. Carney assumed the role of Chief Medical Officer, CPG, and, as part of a team, redesigned and streamlined both the governance and operations of an integrated specialty group, assisted in recruitment and retention of physicians, developed a compensation plan for the multi-specialty group and assisted and lead the operational change of both CPG and CHS through a service line model. This appointment is one of many that Dr. Carney has held at Conemaugh Memorial over the past 20 years where he continues an active practice in General Surgery.

Dr. Carney has served on a number of committees and held several hospital leadership positions throughout his tenure, including President of the medical staff and member of the Conemaugh Health System Board of Directors.

Dr. Carney received his medical doctorate from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and completed his General Surgery residency at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and is a member in the American Medical Society, American College of Surgeons, American College of General Surgeons, Pennsylvania Medical Society (President, 2005 Cambria/Somerset) and the American Hernia Society. Dr. Carney is currently licensed in Pennsylvania.
