The nature of clinical research integrates various missions of the Conemaugh Health System – education, research and patient care. The Research Program within the Conemaugh Health System is dedicated to supporting the research efforts of the medical staff, residents and students while ensuring compliance with all applicable ethical, legal and regulatory standards. The availability of sophisticated centralized resources offers Conemaugh investigators an exceptional research advantage. Through this structure and the mentorship of many teaching faculty, research will become an important component of resident education and lifelong learning.
Physicians helped develop and currently participate in more than 100 local, regional and national research studies in oncology, internal medicine, neuroscience, family medicine, emergency medicine, pain management and pathology.
Memorial researchers are examining the efficacy of treatment methods in areas as diverse as breast cancer surgery, carotid stenosis endarterectomy and headache pain relief. Under the supervision of Memorial physicians, residents are also encouraged and often required to develop individual research projects in their specialty field.
In addition to the implementation and evaluation of clinical trials, our physicians and researchers are actively involved in several national projects designed to improve health care services for US military members deployed abroad.
