Minimally Invasive Surgery at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center
In 2001, Memorial unveiled four state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgical suites. The spacious suites feature some of the most advanced surgical technologies in the country, including Internet teleconferencing capabilities and voice-activated surgical tools that make the hand movements of the surgeons more precise. The teleconferencing abilities allow surgeons to consult with physicians in adjoining operating rooms, other parts of the country, or even other parts of the world. This immediate connection to leaders in the minimally invasive field ensures that patients receive the most up- to-date care available.
Patients enter the suites through an isolated corridor, which reduces the risk of infection and protects patient privacy. To ensure the highest levels of care, each member of the surgical team has received specialized training in minimally invasive surgical procedures. Common procedures include:
- synovectomies to slow the destruction of joints
- osteotomies to correct bone deformities
- ligament reconstruction
- bone resection to help improve function and relieve pain
- arthrodesis to relieve pain in the ankles, wrist, fingers and thumb
