Auxiliary of Memorial Medical Center

A Tradition of Caring...

The ancestral roots of the Auxiliary go back to the aftermath of the Johnstown Flood of 1889.  Following the great flood, Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, led volunteers who set up refuge stations, distributed food and clothing and collected money from around the world.  These funds helped establish Johnstown's first permanent medical facility, The Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital.  Very early in the hospital's history, the Women's Association was formed.  This dedicated group of women came together to help the hospital with the ever present financial needs.  They raised money to help build and furnish the first nurses home and the children's ward, then the largest of any general hospital in the country.

Over the years, our Auxiliary has seen many changes, including coming together in 1995 with the Mercy Guild after the merger of Memorial Medical Center and the Good Samaritan Medical Center (Formerly Mercy Hospital).

One thing that hasn't changed in over 100 years is the need for auxiliaries to raise funds to support hospital programs and services.

Who Are The Auxilians?

Auxilians are people just like you - members of the community who care about their hospital.  They contribute their time and talents, assisting in a wide range of fund-raising events.  Members are women, men, young, old, professionals, stay at home Moms and working Moms.  Through their fund raising efforts they have helped Memorial Medical Center purchase needed equipment and provide the most up-to-date patient care possible.
