The Lung Treatment Program is a multidisciplinary program that provides exercise, conditioning, endurance training, education and emotional support to patients with chronic pulmonary disease. The Center strives to stabilize or reverse both the physical and mental aspects of pulmonary disease and attempts to return each patient to the highest possible functional capacity allowed by their condition and lifestyle.
The primary objectives of the Lung Treatment Program are to control and alleviate as much as possible the symptoms and complications of chronic respiratory impairment and teach patients how to achieve their highest capability for carrying out activities of daily living.
The pulmonologist evaluates each patient to determine which member of the pulmonary team will need to be involved with the patient?s one-on-one treatment plan. Team members include pulmonary nurses, respiratory, physical and occupational therapists and behavioral health professionals. They work together to provide a plan to help improve the patient?s quality of life.
Patients participating in the comprehensive outpatient pulmonary service program have repeatedly shown a decrease in the number of emergency room visits and number of days spent in the hospital due to reduced symptoms and respiratory infections. In addition, their physical conditioning is improved as well as their self-esteem. The community also benefits through the availability of support groups and education.
Patients who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis and asthma. Patients with cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, pneumoconiosis (black lung), restrictive lung disease or requiring lung transplants may benefit. Patients receive a preliminary screening to determine their eligibility for our program. Referrals are accepted from all sources, including a self-referral.
