The EM program at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center is a well-rounded program with in-house rotations in EMS, Orthopedics, Critical Care Medicine and General Medicine. Our residents also rotate at A.I. Dupoint Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware for Pediatric EM and PICU rotations.
The program curriculum is web-based and modular with a focus on reinforcing didactic education with small group clinical and case discussion experiences. Each weekly module is tailored to the needs of the PGY I, II, III or IV residents along with faculty-led case discussions and clinical presentations.
The Emergency Medicine Curriculum is delivered in 4-5 weekly modules during each of the monthly Emergency Medicine rotations. Each week, residents are assigned one module of didactic material based upon the AOBEM core curriculum. Twenty-four modules per year will be completed through a self-paced, web-based learning management system. Each module will have an associated case discussion that will be facilitated by core faculty on weekly conference days. This two-hour period is intended to cover related content questions and reinforce didactic material with a decision-based scenario. The case discussions will focus on different aspects of education as needed by each resident class. PGY I residents will focus on disease patho-physiology, PGY II residents will focus upon case management and disposition issues, PGY III & IV residents will focus on room management, instructional techniques, and special topics in emergency medicine. Off-service rotators will also have similar discussions for their assigned modules developed in coordination with established programs within the health system.
A plenary lecture is scheduled for each week of conference (48 weeks per year) that will consist of invited speakers, special topical discussion or core faculty lectures on topical areas. Skills lab-Evaluation-Testing block is defined week to week to address special needs of the class, as well as hands-on training for procedures, ultrasounds, resident presentations or EM management case discussions.
Optional additional lectures include the hospital monthly GME noon lectures, daily noon medicine lectures, Trauma lectures and other programming.
One monthly journal club will be organized and presented by each resident. This will be an optional evening out depending on work schedules and off-service rotations. Journal articles will be selected by the resident and discussion facilitated by the resident. The resident will be assisted by assigned core faculty mentorship.
