New Psychiatrist now On Board at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center

July 12, 2017

Conemaugh Health System welcomes Dr. Umesh Rao Chakunta, board-certified psychiatrist specializing in adult and geriatric patients.

Dr. Chakunta is a graduate of Bharati Vidyapeeth’s Medical College in Pune, India. He earned a Master of Science in Health Care Administration from the University of New Haven in Connecticut before completing a Psychiatry Residency at the University of South Dakota in Sioux Fall, South Dakota, and a Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

While working as a research affiliate in Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine, Dr. Chakunta decided behavioral health was what he wanted to specialize in. “I became very comfortable dealing with the mental health community and felt this was an area where I could truly make a difference,” says Dr. Chakunta. “So many people struggle with mental illness, people you see every day and don’t realize what they are going through. I have seen a great deal of success in helping these people and I love that I can help make a difference in their lives.”

Dr. Chakunta comes to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center from Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa, where he served as Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and provided inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care to patients including oversight of psychiatric consultations at seven nursing homes.

At Conemaugh Memorial, Dr. Chakunta will treat both inpatient and outpatients, 18 and older, for a range of mental health conditions. He has special interest in caring for patients with dementia related psychiatric problems and other neuro psychiatric syndromes. “My goal is to deliver consistent high quality care for patients and to maintain the continuity of care available to them,” adds Dr. Chakunta.

Dr. Chakunta’s wife is an internal medicine resident at Conemaugh Memorial. They are the proud parents of a one-year-old son.
