Every year, on the third Thursday of November, smokers across the nation take part in the American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout. Nearly 40 million Americans still smoke cigarettes, and tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the world. In an effort to provide a healthy environment and make our communities healthier, Nason Hospital is pleased to announce that on January 1, 2017 we will transition to a 100% tobacco-free campus. “Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death and disease in this country. We are a healthcare institution and our job is to save lives and make communities healthier, so becoming 100% tobacco-free not only makes sense but it is key to our mission as part of our community” said CEO Tim Harclerode.
When the tobacco-free campus policy goes into effect, no smoking or tobacco use will be permitted in any Nason offices or on any Nason owned properties including the parking lots and grounds. There will no longer be designated areas for smoking or smokeless tobacco use (including electronic cigarettes).
Patients will not be permitted to leave the hospital to smoke or use tobacco at any time. “We care about the health and well-being of our staff, patients and visitors.” said Mr. Harclerode, “Scientific evidence shows that smoking is dangerous to our health, and that many health issues are associated with secondhand smoke which affect our nonsmoking staff, patients and visitors. We believe that maintaining a tobacco-free shift sets an example to businesses, community leaders, organizations and residents of our service area.”
Becoming a 100% tobacco-free campus is a timely and important resolution for Nason Hospital. The decision to become completely tobacco-free is reinforced by Nason Hospital’s participation in the Healthy Blair County Coalition which has made it a goal to reduce tobacco use in Blair County.
