Celine Gisbert, MD, a graduate of Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency Program, has completed the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP) Advanced Curriculum Fellowship Program and is now also a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM).
The ASBP program prepares health care providers to better treat patients affected by obesity and its associated conditions through completion of a three-year, 500 hour, obesity treatment-specific continuing medical education program. Education sessions include; diet and nutrition, behavior modification techniques, exercise prescription, pharmacotherapy and pathophysiology of glucose intolerance, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that nearly 36% of U.S. adults and 17% of youth are affected by obesity. Obesity increases the risk of having heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers.
“In Pennsylvania, the prevalence of adult obesity is 30% and 65% are overweight,” said Dr. Gisbert. “I am interested in being part of the solution to this medical epidemic by locally helping patients affected by obesity who are seeking help through safe, evidence-based medical treatment options.”
The Obesity Algorithm, used by ASBP, outlines four medical weight-loss methods: dietary modification, exercise prescription, behavior modification and medication. Physicians may also discuss surgical options with some patients.
Dr. Gisbert serves as a Board Certified Bariatrician with Conemaugh Memorial’s Weight Management program. She also serves as Medical Director of Conemaugh’s Corporate Care Services and sees patients at Conemaugh’s MedWELL Urgent Care.
The Weight Management Center is home to a skilled team of physicians, bariatricians, nurses, dietitians, psychologists and other health care professionals who provide care and support. Three types of weight loss surgery are offered at Conemaugh Memorial including Gastric Bypass, Gastric Sleeve and Adjustable Gastric Band. Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center has received accreditation as a comprehensive center for bariatric surgery.
