Rick Johns, Simulation and Training Specialist for the Medical Skill Learning Center at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, has earned certification for MSLC. Rick is now a Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). There are currently 27 Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialists worldwide, and Ricky is one of four from Pennsylvania.
“It’s really exciting for our simulation lab here because it shows that we stand out. It validates what we’re doing here,” says Johns. We compare to other simulation labs, like Harvard or Yale.” Johns’ certification validates his knowledge of the MSLC, as well as the hospital in conveying its goals and aspirations for its facilities.
Leah Patton, manager of Conemaugh Medical Skills Learning Center, is equally pleased about his certification. “I am excited Rick took the initiative to pursue certification as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist. He is a valuable asset and represents our department well. Rick continually enhances his technical abilities with a blend of creativity to keep learners engaged. He is highly respected by both internal and external stakeholders, and is an important link to education at our facility.”
Conemaugh’s MSLC is home to a variety of patient simulators including adult, child, infant and mother-child birthing simulator. Controlled by a member of the MSLC staff, the simulators talk, cry, bleed, sweat, adjust to change position and interventions, replicate vital signs changes and provide real-life medical scenarios for users, including reproducing rare and complicated conditions.
