Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center has received full Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI Accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC), the accrediting arm of the American College of Cardiology. SCPC is an international not-for-profit organization focused on transforming cardiovascular care through quality, cost and patient satisfaction.

Heart attacks are the leading cause of death in the United States, with 600,000 people dying annually of heart disease. More than five million Americans visit hospitals each year with chest pain. SCPC’s goal is to significantly reduce the mortality rate of these patients by teaching the public to recognize and react to the early symptoms of a possible heart attack, reduce the time that it takes to receive treatment, and increase the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment.

“People tend to wait when they think they might be having a heart attack, and that’s a mistake,” said Dr. Daniel Wehner, Chairman of Conemaugh Memorial’s Emergency Department. “The average patient arrives in the emergency department more than two hours after the onset of symptoms, but what they don’t realize is that the sooner a heart attack is treated, the less damage to the heart and the better the outcome for the patient. With our new accreditation, we hope to bring greater awareness to the importance of timely care and help even more people in our region.”

An Accredited Chest Pain Center’s (CPC) evidence-based, protocol-driven and systematic approach to cardiac patient care allows clinicians to reduce time to treatment during the critical early stages of a heart attack. Accredited facilities better monitor patients when it is not initially clear whether or not a patient is having a coronary event. Such monitoring ensures patients are neither sent home too early nor needlessly admitted.

“Earning Chest Pain Center accreditation is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our clinical team, our community partners and the SCPC, who have been working collaboratively to ensure our hospital is prepared to provide high quality care to patients when heart attacks strike,” said Dr. Srikanth Penumetsa, Medical Director

of Conemaugh Memorial’s Chest Pain Center. “Conemaugh Memorial’s top priority is to provide quality healthcare close to home, and this accomplishment demonstrates one of the many ways we continually work to enhance and improve our service.”

Conemaugh Memorial underwent a comprehensive onsite review by a team of accreditation review specialists. By achieving SCPC’s Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI Accreditation status, Conemaugh Memorial demonstrates expertise in the following areas:

  • Integrating the emergency department with the local emergency medical system
  • Assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients quickly
  • Effectively treating patients at low risk for acute coronary syndrome and no assignable cause for their symptoms
  • Continually seeking to improve processes and procedures
  • Ensuring the competence and training of Accredited Chest Pain Center personnel
  • Maintaining organizational structure and commitment
  • Constructing a functional design that promotes optimal patient care
  • Supporting community outreach programs that educate the public to promptly seek medical care if they display symptoms of a possible heart attack

Conemaugh Memorial addresses the entire continuum of care for the heart patient, including important areas such as dispatch, Emergency Medical System, emergency department, a cardiac catheterization lab with 25+ years experience, cardiac diagnostics and cardiac rehabilitation. By becoming an Accredited Chest Pain Center, Conemaugh Memorial has enhanced the quality of care for the cardiac patient and has demonstrated its commitment to higher standards.
